Why volunteering matters

Every hour you give creates a ripple of impact across our community. Volunteers are the heart of everything we do. Without them, vital services like our food bank and holiday fundraising campaigns simply could not happen. When you volunteer, you are not just giving your time; you are giving hope, dignity, and support to thousands of neighbours who need it most.

Food bank

Our food bank serves hundreds of families each month, and it runs entirely on the dedication of volunteers like you. Volunteer shifts are available throughout the year and include:

  • Sorting and packing donated food items
  • Assisting with food distribution to families in need
  • Stocking shelves and organizing the stockrooms
  • Greeting and assisting clients in a welcoming manner

Availability: Ongoing, all year round. Flexible morning and afternoon shifts.

Christmas kettles

Each holiday season, our Christmas Kettle campaign raises vital funds that support our programs throughout the year. Kettle volunteers stand at locations across the community, spreading holiday cheer while making a lasting difference. Duties include:

  • Standing at a kettle location in shopping centres and busy public areas
  • Greeting donors warmly and thanking them for their generosity
  • Helping raise awareness of our programs and community impact
  • Representing the organization with a friendly, positive presence

Availability: Seasonal — November and December. Shifts are 2 hours and scheduled to suit your availability.

Frequently asked questions

Find answers to common questions about volunteering with the Kettle Campaign.
  • What is the Christmas Kettle Campaign?

The Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Campaign is our largest fundraising drive of the year and one of Canada’s largest and most recognizable annual charitable events. With more than 2,000 kettle locations across Canada, the kettle not only raises critical funds but boosts the Army’s visibility and promotes awareness.

Since 1903, we have seen kettle campaign donations transform the lives of millions of Canadians, including helping them find a way out of poverty permanently.

  • How are the funds used?

Funds raised through Christmas kettles, together with other sources of funds, help provide direct, compassionate, hands-on service to 1.9 million vulnerable people each year in Canada. Each kettle location is organized and managed by a local Salvation Army unit. The funds raised stay in the community in which they were donated.
